چکیده

We present a fast condition estimation algorithm for the eigenvalues of a class of structured matrices. These matrices are low rank modifications to Hermitian, skew-Hermitian, and unitary matrices. Fast structured operations for these matrices are presented, including Schur decomposition, eigenvalue block swapping, matrix equation solving, compact structure reconstruction, etc. Compact semiseparable representations of matrices are used in these operations. We use these operations in a new, improved version of the statistical condition estimation method for eigenvalue problems. The estimation algorithm costs O(n2) flops for all eigenvalues, instead of O(n3) as in traditional algorithms, where n is the order of the matrix. The algorithm provides reliable condition estimates for both eigenvalues and eigenvalue clusters. The proposed structured matrix operations are also useful for additional eigenvalue problems and other applications. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the reliability and efficiency of the algorithm.

Existence results of infinitely many solutions for a class of p(x)-biharmonic problems

The existence of infinitely many weak solutions for a Navier doubly eigenvalue boundary value problem involving the $p(x)$-biharmonic operator is established. In our main result, under an appropriate oscillating behavior of the nonlinearity and suitable assumptions on the variable exponent, a sequence of pairwise distinct solutions is obtained. Furthermore, some applications are pointed out.

Orthogonal Functions and Inverse Eigenvalue Problems

The Newton polygon, an elementary geometric construction first devised by Sir Isaac Newton, has been often used in the context of perturbation theory as a tool for deriving explicit first-order eigenvalue perturbation expansions. On one hand, this usually gives useful information on the directions in which perturbed eigenvalues move, something which is crucial in several practical situations wh...

Structured eigenvalue condition numbers and linearizations for matrix polynomials

This work is concerned with eigenvalue problems for structured matrix polynomials, including complex symmetric, Hermitian, even, odd, palindromic, and anti-palindromic matrix polynomials. Most numerical approaches to solving such eigenvalue problems proceed by linearizing the matrix polynomial into a matrix pencil of larger size. Recently, linearizations have been classified for which the penci...

Structured Eigenvalue Problems

Most eigenvalue problems arising in practice are known to be structured. Structure is often introduced by discretization and linearization techniques but may also be a consequence of properties induced by the original problem. Preserving this structure can help preserve physically relevant symmetries in the eigenvalues of the matrix and may improve the accuracy and efficiency of an eigenvalue c...
